In this ver sion, though, race contributes to his persecution. It is the first representation in the history o f American cinem a o f Jesus as a black man. What Jesus looked like has long been d eb ated by th eo lo g ian s around the world. Different cul tures have imagined him in differ ent ways, says Stephen Prothero, chairm an o f the religion depart ment a, Boston U niversity. In Japan, Jesus looks Japanese. In Africa, he is black. W hile some black churches have images o f a black Jesus be hind the altar and others have c la im e d C h ris t w as b la c k , Prothero says "none o f those arguments or i mages have fi Itered much into the m ainstream." F ilm m a k e r Jean C la u d e LaM arre set out to change that w ith " C o lo r o f th e C r o s s .” LaMarre, who plays Jesus, wrote, directed and financed the film. "Black people in this country are the only race o f people who w orship a god outside their own image," says LaMarre, 38, adding that showing Christ as a black man is "the most poignant way to deal with the issue of race in this country because it goes to the heart of how we look at the world." It also provides a positive im age o f blacks, som ething that's been scant in the U.S., says the Rev. Cecil "Chip" Murray, long time leaderof L. A.’s First African M ethodist Episcopal Church and a producer o f the film. Why does race matter in the story o f Christ? "Jesus isn’t in the hands of h is to r ia n s ," P ro th e ro say s. "What we have now is our own debate and, in that debate, race has to be a factor because race is a big predicam ent in American life." Fi Im is a powerful place to have the discussion, says Humphries- Brooks, who calls the medium "one o f the last places that is quasi-public for the formation of values in America." "Artistic and aesthetic views are as important in developing religious values as the words we speak. Everybody goes to the movies. Not everybody goes to the same church." Filmmaker LaM arre thinks the film can only have a positive ef fect. "The message is that color, a colored Jesus Christ, doesn't mat ter," he says. "That's why the movie is important. When you have one prevailing image out there, it sug gests color does matter."
